Although unaware of the hidden aspects of the 17 acre grassy woodland treasure bought back in late 1983 (beyond the sheer delight in the mix of ancient gums and wattles), Glenn & Vicki Williams knew their lifestyle was destined to connect with a bushland environment.
Social connections led Glenn & Vicki to become members of the Strathalbyn Branch of Trees For Life in 1986.
At this time strolling around their little patch of paradise with their TFL friends, their knowledge swiftly expanded as they were formally introduced to intimate botanical names for the now visible diverse range of trees, shrubs and many smaller plants.
Some early ‘open-area recovery’ sites, using material collected on-site, had been planted out with home-grown Red Gum, Blue Gum, Rough-barked Manna Gum, Pink Gum and Peppermint Box. Such revegetation was soon supplemented by Bursaria spinosa, Kennedia prostrata, Bossiaea prostrata, Thomasia petalocalyx, Arthropodium strictum, Bulbine bulbosa and a suite of native grasses.
It also soon became clear, that natural regeneration was advantaging the bushland recovery far more rapidly and successfully than modest revegetation efforts. Glenn & Vicki were encouraged by that same group of TFL friends, to consider a Heritage Agreement for their secluded Macclesfield property, which they entered into in 1988. From here on the annual discovery of more and more species delighted and astounded them both.
Over the ensuing years this powerful and successful bushland conservation recipe has been repeated for many properties throughout South Australia: Trees For Life connections volunteer passion and commitment Heritage Agreement = a significant partnership.
Glenn commented that the recipe does expose volunteers to the ‘bushcare bends’ – the classic symptoms for which are ‘chronic delight’, a perpetual thirst for discovery of new treasures, the ability to talk to plants and animals and the onset of infectious enthusiasm and a missionary zeal to free native plants held captive by invading weeds. “Once bitten, forever smitten”.
Long term bushcarers Glenn and Vicki have valued the opportunity to make a difference and to enjoy the tranquility, work amongst the cavorting wrens, finches, honeyeaters and listen to the kookaburras herald in the day’s end as darkness falls.
Connections with Trees For Life and the Bush For life program have remained with a number of BAT’s (Bush Action Team’s) visiting the property from time to time over many years undertaking vital on ground maintenance.
With a recent residential move to Nairne as part of a significant lifestyle change for extended family care, Glenn & Vicki’s association with their wonderful Macclesfield property is drawing to an end. The property is on the market and new, sympathetic owners are needed for its ongoing care and to enjoy a lasting legacy.
