Did you know the amount of native vegetation remaining in the Mount Lofty Ranges is somewhere between 8 and 12 percent?

Scientists believe that a minimum of 30 percent of land (consisting of native vegetation) in the Mount Lofty Ranges is needed to prevent many flora and fauna extinctions. The clearing of land for farming, commercial, industrial and housing uses are the main culprits and the clearing of high quality intact native vegetation is still occurring. Remnant native vegetation can be found on private property, national parks, council reserves, roadsides, cemeteries, golf courses and disused mining sites. Garden escapes – environmental weeds which originated in household gardens – are capable of establishing themselves on any of these sites, crowding out and smothering what is left of the local native species.
