ElectraNet operates and maintains South Australia’s high-voltage transmission network which transports power over long distances and to remote areas. ElectraNet is committed to environmental sustainability and is conscious of the impact that new high-voltage electricity infrastructure can have on the environment.
In 1999 ElectraNet sponsored the growing of 25,000 seedlings as part of their commitment to the Federal Government’s Greenhouse Challenge, a program which was devised to encourage businesses to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in order for Australia to meet targets set in Kyoto in 1998. Whilst the climate change debate still continues, ElectraNet has maintained their commitment to the environment through the annual Red Gum sponsorship of Trees For Life and the engagement of TFL’s trained staff and volunteers since July 2008 to undertake ongoing bush rehabilitation activities at ElectraNet’s Cherry Gardens substation site to remove and control exotic vegetation and weeds.
Trees For Life has also partnered with ElectraNet to revegetate approximately 12 hectares of grazing land surrounding the company’s Tungkillo substation, with locally-sourced native flora species.
More recently ElectraNet has committed to sponsor the new initiative Trees For Towns which will see 30 towns across the state grow and plant out 1,000 local native seedlings each. This will result in 30,000 local native seedlings being planting to help beautify town entrances, parks, open spaces, roadside verges and medium strips.
