This parcel of land has an interesting history. It was part of a stock route running from the Northern pastoral country to the township of Mannum. The government of the day required the landholders to clear these areas to allow the droving of stock along the route.
Planting Dates
Direct seeding was undertaken on the 4th and 17th July 2008 using the ‘V’ blade seeding machine. The ‘V’ blade seeder is mounted behind a tractor and is utilised in low rainfall areas and on sites that have sandy soil. It allows for the seeding process to be chemical free as it scrapes the top soil and weeds away from the immediate planting site.
This location has been badly affected by drought so germination has been slow and patchy. Slightly better and more sustained rainfall this year should lead to further germination. If at the end of the next season the germination has not reached target, we will replant the areas that have not done well. Direct seeding is slower to show results but creates a more robust natural planting in the long term.
