The Monarto Zoological Park (now known as Monarto Zoo) Revegetation Project began in 2002, and was Trees For Life’s first dedicated carbon off-set planting site.
More than 150,000 local provenance trees, shrubs and ground covers have been established over 120 hectares and plantings are continuing.
The project has been a spectacular success thanks to Trees For Life and Monarto Zoo staff and the efforts of hundreds of local school children and adult volunteers.
The project has resulted in wonderful biodiversity outcomes within the 1,000 hectare zoo environs, created expanded habitat for the local native fauna, addressed top-soil erosion and salinity issues, buffered remnant vegetation, provided valuable educational opportunities and enhanced the aesthetics of the zoo for all of its patrons.

Carbon uptake:
The planting target for this site is 1000 Kyoto compliant plants per hectare. Based on an estimate of 6 plants per tonne CO2 absorption over the life of the planting (100 years) the 2008 planting will sequester 166 tonnes CO2e per hectare.
