Site details
Mt Effie lies 3 kilometres north-east of Mt Compass on the Fleurieu Peninsula.. 10 hectares of direct seeding on cleared land at the base and side of Mt Effie was commenced in 2009 and will be completed in 2010. The planting will buffer and link the substantial remnant vegetation areas on the property that have been placed under protective Heritage Agreement by the landholder. The land varies from gentle to extreme slopes and a combination of machine and hand direct seeding will be used to carry out the revegetation.
Species planted on site:
Acacia sp, paradoxa, pycnantha, retinodes (hill form)
Allocasuarina sp: verticillata, muelleriana, striata
Bursaria spinosa
Callistemon sieberi
Dodonaea viscosa spatulata
Eucalyptus sp,baxteri, cosmophylla, fasciculosa, leucoxylon, obliqua
Leptospermum sp: continentale, lanigerum
Xanthorrhoea semiplana
Site Update, February 2011:
Growth excellent, tube-stock looking good, high survival rate
Site Update, July 2010:
Seedlings are generally establishing very well. The upper areas are excellent with dense germination and rapid growth. The steep slopes where hand direct seeding was carried out have developed well, except in one area where rabbits have damaged germinating seedlings. The lower slopes have patchy germination. Rabbits have been active in this area also and affected establishment. To redress the damage caused by rabbits on the lower slopes, a planting day was held on 26th June. Staff from the Adelaide Convention Centre undertook the plantings and guarded the new seedlings.
There were also areas of blackberry that required control. This was carried out on 15th March by staff and volunteers and the results have been good.
Other environmental initiatives on this site:
A spring fed dam adjacent the upper slopes of the Carbon Neutral revegetation has been stocked with Yarra Pygmy Perch taken from the lower lakes area of the Murray River in an attempt to protect the species from extinction. Recent counts have been heartening with substantial numbers and several generations apparent in the dam. Some of these fish will now be transferred to other dams to maintain healthy populations whilst the river system recovers from a decade of drought and low water flows.
