Site details
This site has been direct seeded using local provenance seed sourced from native plants within the area. The direct seeding was undertaken using the ‘V’ blade seeding machine. The ‘V’ blade seeder is mounted behind a tractor and is utilised in low rainfall areas and on sites that have sandy soil. It allows for the process to be chemical free if required as it scrapes the top soil and weeds from around the immediate planting site.
Species planted on site:
Acacia sp: brachybotra, hakeoides, ligulata, microcarpa, nyssophylla, oswaldii, pycnantha
Callitris gracilis
Dodonaea viscosa angustissima
Enchylaena tomentosa
Eucalyptus sp: brachycalyx, calycogona, gracilis, leptophylla, oleosa, phenax, porosa, socialis
Melaleuca lanceolata
Pittosporum phylliraeoides
Rhagodia sp: crassifolia, parabolica
Senna artemisioides mixed ssp
Site Update, October 2011:
2008 Area
In an effort to redress the shortfall of stem numbers in the 2008 seeded areas, a further 8km of direct seeding was done on the 2nd August 2011 to remediate the poorest areas. The 2008 area was over-sprayed on 7th and 8th June to prepare for this work.
2009 Area
As stem numbers have been exceeded no further seeding is necessary.
Seedlings in both areas are still small and below the weed line so they are not yet obvious in whole of site photos.
Given the extraordinary rains of 2010, the plants established in the 2008 area under extreme duress are now flourishing, and new germination has occurred. The 2009 seeded area is looking very promising with further germination during 2010.
The 2009 planting germination is very promising, with the best soil moisture for several years. With direct seeding germination can continue for up to three years.
Second year audit
Independent audit undertaken by Rural Solutions, September 2010
Verified Survival to date: 3680
Survival rates for all the sites planted in 2008 are below target due to severe drought conditions in South Australia in that year. With direct seeding there is the possibility of further germination up to 5 years from seeding. However, to ensure we meet our target stems on this site we will conduct some infill planting in 2011.
Infill plan:
Sow additional of 12.7km direct seeding rows using 6.3kg of seed in autumn 2011
Internal audit autumn 2012
Final independent audit 2013
Site 141 Mannum North, South Australia
Protection 100 years
Planted June 2008, May 2009 using Direct Seeding method
Target 2008 planting 7,500 trees and shrubs
2009 planting 11,250 trees and shrubs
Audit results 2008 planting 3,680 trees and shrubs = 48%
2009 planting 24,574 trees and shrubs = 218%
